The SHRM Savannah Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee supports the SHRM Foundation initiatives for providing a visible pathway that provides justice impacted individuals an opportunity to work as well as offer employers an opportunity to address the labor shortage through second chance hiring, reduce crime and economic disenfranchisement.

DEI initiatives have become a key strategy in organizations. However, these initiatives are behind when it comes to second chance hiring. Employers continue to overlook this untapped talent pool. True inclusion will require organizations to go a step further to include those with a criminal background. A robust DEI program will ensure a seat at the table. Yet those impacted by incarceration cannot get in the room to have a seat at the table. Organizations must be able to look past the stigmas of having a criminal record to recognize there is an enormous untapped talent pool and potential of those impacted by incarceration. By including justice impacted individuals, we can help meet our responsibilities as an organization, community leader and as human beings. Organizations have a responsibility to address and embrace the responsibility of improving access to employment opportunities for justice impacted individuals.

The second chance initiative aims to connect employers with an untapped yet underutilized talent pool. Gainful employment is the cornerstone of stability and growth for men and women. According to Forbes, the effects of incarceration and the current approach to criminal justice and corrections in the U.S is astounding, over 650,000 formerly incarcerated individuals enter the job market. Yet, after reentry nearly three-quarters remain unemployed. The result is justice impacted individuals have been marred and labeled by their transgressions. The path towards redemption and restoration starts with an opportunity such as a second chance. If you look past the stigma, you will find a wealth of untapped talent and potential among individuals impacted by incarceration.
